Author: Nebraska State Treasurer John Murante
As I think back on this past weekend’s Fourth of July festivities, and the celebration of the independence of our nation, I feel so grateful to have such wonderful friends and family to celebrate with, even while social distancing. Being an American means access to vital freedoms including but not limited to freedom of speech, freedom of religion to freedom of expression. Important among those is one freedom I hold close to my heart as Nebraska State Treasurer: financial freedom.
While this is something many individuals may take for granted, it is something the disability community has only been able to achieve in recent years. For far too long, individuals with disabilities could not save more than $2,000 in assets without compromising their access to resource-based benefits like SNAP and Medicaid. Financial independence should be a right for all, which is why I am grateful every day for the passing of the ABLE Act in 2014 which finally helped our community achieve the financial freedom and independence they are entitled to.
This critical piece of legislation is the reason why the Enable Savings Plan exists today, and helps to unlock financial freedoms through the ability to save without impacting eligibility for resourced based benefits. Enable offers tax advantages, a multitude of investment options, and tools to help further aid in the savings process.
We are proud to help pave the pathway to financial independence for our Account Owners, and even while many things have changed in the past few months in the wake of COVID-19, bringing about new financial challenges for many, the Enable team remains as committed as ever to helping Account Owners save and reach their financial goals.
To all our Account Owners, I wish you a healthy, safe and wonderful rest of the summer, and encourage you to continuously reflect upon and advocate for financial independence for all.
